PSALM 105*
God’s Fidelity to the Promise
I
make known among the peoples his deeds!b
proclaim all his wondrous deeds!
let hearts that seek the LORD rejoice!
constantly seek his face.c
his wonders and words of judgment,
offspring of Jacob the chosen one!
II
whose judgments reach through all the earth.
the word he commanded for a thousand generations,
and swore to Isaac,d
an everlasting covenant for Israel:
your own allotted inheritance.”e
III
a handful, and strangers there,
from one kingdom to another people,
for their sake he rebuked kings:*
to my prophets do no harm.”
IV
destroyed the grain that sustained them.*g
Joseph, sold as a slave.h
collared his neck in iron,i
and the word of the LORD proved him true.j
the ruler of peoples set him free.k
ruler over all his possessions,l
to teach his elders wisdom.
V
Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.*
made them more numerous than their foes.n
to treat his servants deceitfully.o
and Aaron whom he had chosen.p
and wonders in the land of Ham.
but they rebelled against his word.
and killed their fish.
even the chambers of their kings.
gnats through all their country.
flashes of lightning throughout their land.
shattered the trees of their country.
grasshoppers without number.r
they devoured the crops of their fields.
the first fruits of all their vigor.
laden with silver and gold;s
no one among the tribes stumbled.
for fear had seized them.
VI
and made a fire to light up the night.t
with bread from heaven he filled them.u
it flowed through the desert like a river.v
to Abraham his servant.
his chosen ones with shouts of triumph.
they took possession of the wealth of the peoples,w
and observe his teachings.x
Hallelujah!
* [Psalm 105] A hymn to God who promised the land of Canaan to the holy people, cf. Ps 78; 106; 136. Israel is invited to praise and seek the presence of God (Ps 105:1–6), who is faithful to the promise of land to the ancestors (Ps 105:7–11). In every phase of the national story—the ancestors in the land of Canaan (Ps 105:12–15), Joseph in Egypt (Ps 105:16–22), Israel in Egypt (Ps 105:23–38), Israel in the desert on the way to Canaan (Ps 105:39–45)—God remained faithful, reiterating the promise of the land to successive servants.
* [105:14] Kings: Pharaoh and Abimelech of Gerar, cf. Gn 12:17; 20:6–7.
